IBM has been a partner of Lawson since the 1980s, when Lawson first developed ERP solutions on IBM's System/38 platform. Since then, Lawson applications have been tested and optimized on all IBM platforms and both companies have developed an expertise in IBM/Lawson implementations.

In 2005, IBM and Lawson announced an expanded partnership that will integrate IBM middleware technology, such as WebSphere and Tivoli, into Lawson's ERP product set and optimize Lawson performance on IBM open-standards based hardware, software and DB2 Information Management products. As part of this strategic alliance, IBM and Lawson will develop and market new vertical applications in Lawson's targeted industry segments. IBM's WebSphere is also the middleware foundation for Lawson's new "Project Landmark" business application environment, which is designed to help Lawson clients move to a J2EE-standard service-oriented architecture and utilize an open standards-based framework for automating business processes with customers, partners and suppliers. IBM System p/AIX, WebSphere, Tivoli and DB2 have been selected by Lawson as their native platform for all new development.

The goal of the Lawson/IBM alliance is to deliver next-generation, vertically-tailored products and services to Lawson and IBM clients that rapidly adapt to changes in client organizations, while providing the industry's lowest total cost of ownership and highest possible return on the technology investment.
