What’s the number one reason for failed ERP implementations?

It’s users. That may sound like blaming the victim but it’s true. According to AMR Research, ERP systems fail when users don’t get it. Users don’t get it when they’re not trained. According to META Group, only a quarter of users are competent to use their ERP system. The rest are “substandard”.

It’s a widespread problem. META Group says that 83% of companies that implement ERP systems don’t implement comprehensive training programs. That’s like buying a brand new Ferrari, giving it to your teenage son and then forgetting to sign him up for driver training.

Why do companies do that? Because training is hard. It’s hard to get a group of adults to sit still in a classroom while you teach them something. It also takes them away from their “real” job. That can reduce productivity in the short run. It also means that they’re probably not learning in a realistic environment. What they learn in a classroom may not make it back to the cubicle.

So why not teach them on the job? Wouldn’t it be nice to have a teacher sit behind each user and coach them through each process? Well yes – in fact, it’s essentially what you get with Learning Accelerator. It’s not a real teacher but a piece of software that “knows” the process and can “watch” user’s behavior. If a user gets confused, he or she can query the software and get some coaching. Best of all, the software can adapt to various learning styles. If the user likes to see the lesson, the software shows it. If the user likes to hear the lesson, the software speaks. The software adapts; the user learns. It’s a great way to keep users on the job while also increasing their productivity. It’s also a small insurance policy for a big ticket item.

By the way, the software is Lawson’s Learning Accelerator.
::: Here’s where you can learn more about it.
